About Welshmans Reef Vineyard

In 1986 we began our plantings with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Semillon in bare sheep paddocks. Since then the vineyard has grown and flourished. Chardonnay and Merlot were added in the early 1990’s, and more recently plantings of Sauvignon Blanc.

Early grape crops were sold to other wineries, including Hanging Rock , Passing Clouds, Wildwood, and Penfolds. In time we proceeded with making our own wine, and facilities were established in the Old Newstead Co-operative Butter Factory.

We opened the doors on the Queen’s Birthday weekend of 1994, celebrating the occasion with a big party. Welshmans Reef Vineyard has continued to grow, and now having outgrown the facilities at the Butter Factory, have built a new winery and tasting room at the vineyard.

All wine sold under the Welshmans Reef Vineyard label is grown and made from estate grown fruit.

Welshmans Reef Vineyard also provides contract winemaking for a growing number of grape producers, both large and small, from the local Goldfields area to as far afield as Mildura and Robinvale, the Pyrenees and the Yarra Valley.
