After 10 years of making and selling wine at the old Newstead Butter Factory we have built a lovely tasting and sales facility on our vineyard property. The new winery is about 4km from Newstead on the Maldon-Newstead Road, in the hamlet of Welshmans Reef, which is an old gold mining district in central Victoria.
Welshmans Reef cellar door and pizza oven
Our mudbrick cellar door is situated in 50 acres of bush, set in mature box ironbark woodland, and overlooks vineyards and surrounding paddocks toward Lake Cairn Curran, taking in the surrounding vistas of Mt Tarrengower and Gough’s Range.
Now there is space, peaceful views, and the access is excellent. The view from the verandah shows sheep quietly grazing in the distance, joined by small flocks of galahs, corellas and lorikeets, while welcome swallows make themselves at home around the building.
During vintage the winemaking side of things can become quite hectic, but all around is a tranquil delight. Join us for a glass of wine on the verandah or coffee made freshly with Castlemaine’s own Coffee Basics coffee.
We also cater for groups and events by appointment.
